Our assignment was to create a baby character with shapes using Illustrator. First, we create the eyes using the oval tool. but held down shift to create a perfect circle. We filled it with a purple gradient. Then we created another circle holding down shift again and filled it with black. Next we created 3 more oval shapes to add a shine layer to the eyes. Next we duplicated the eye to have a pair. We then created it's face shape using an oval tool. Then we filled it with a skintone gradient of our choice. Next we created it's mouth using the pen tool and filling it with a pink gradient. The mouth is in the shape of a scowl. Next, we drew on it's nose and eyebrows using the brush tool in the stroke black. We added brown freckles using the same tool. Lastly we drew on a blue mow-hawk using the brush tool in blue.
A Self Portrait
For this assignment we learned how to recreate an image of ourselves using illustrator. In all honestly, this program was quite difficult at first to navigate, but slowly became easier and more natural to me. The most difficult part was the organization of the layers and figuring out how to fix issues regarding that. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this program. To begin with my illustration I imported a photo of myself and dimmed the opacity to 50%. I began creating my face shape using the pen tool, I would soon adjust the anchor points using the white arrow. I filled it with a gradient that was similar to my skin tone currently, however in the photo I was looking tanner than usual! Next I began to trace my eyes using a brush in grey and a shade darker than my skin tone. I used the brush to also fill in the whites in my eyes. Next I layered an oval shape to create my iris and coloured it brown. Next I layered another oval shape to create my pupil. I also highlighted my iris using the brush tool in white and dimmed the opacity to about 40% to make the eyes look more realistic. Next, I added eyelashes using a thin brush (0.25) and used one shade lighter than black and also traced shadows using a translucent grey shade. I created my eyebrows my filling it with a lighter brown shade and using the pen tool to trace it. Than I used a thin brush to created lines than resembled hairs in a shade darker. I created my birthmark on my cheek using the brush tool in a brown shade but I turned the opacity down so it wasn't so harsh. I traced my nose using a shade darker than my original skin tone and also created by painting with a pink toned shade. I added a highlight using a translucent white shade and a brush. To draw my lips, I used the pen tool and trace the shape and filled it with a pink gradient. I added white highlights and used a magenta-like colour to draw a line in the middle to separate my lips. I added a contour shade using a darker brown colour and turned the opacity down. I drew the contour to my bottom lip, cheek, and nose. I also added lines underneath my eyes because they're puffy. I created my ear by tracing it with the pen tool, filling it with the same gradient and adding shadows and lines using shades darker to create depth. I also added my earrings using grey and white brushes. Next, I created my hair. I first used the pen tool to create an outline and shape of my hair and filled it with a translucent black. I then chose a dome brush to create brush strokes that resembled hair. I repeated this process to created all my hair and my bangs. I would also make the brush very thins to create wispy, out of place hairs. Next I created my neck, and hand using the pen tool. I filled it with the same skin tone gradient. I traced the lines on my hand and used a darker brown to create the shadows that appear on my wrist and my neck. Lastly, I created my sweater. I colour matched the turquoise colour and created a shape using the pen tool. I then filled it with that colour and created sections of it such as my arm, shoulder, and chest. The sweater section on my wrist I made a lighter colour. Lastly, I drew on the shadows and stitching that appeared on the sweater using the shade darker. Overall, I'm satisfied with my drawing but I know I could of done a better job if I was given a very long amount of time to complete this and gotten more familiar with the program.
